The picture below is obviously a fence, but what type of structure would this rather small fence enclose? This fence is designed to encircle a tabletop Christmas tree, or "feather tree". Feather trees were popular during the Victorian Era (mid-1800's to early 1900's).
Feather trees get their name because they are actually made from goose feathers carefully tied together around an armature, or tree form. Feather trees aren't lush and full of greenery, but they show off your ornament collection quite well:

I have another dismantled fence at home that's painted green. These fences aren't as impressive when they aren't assembled, so keep your eye out for them at an estate sale or auction in a bag or box. When you get the whole kit and kaboodle together with your tree and ornaments, it's quite magical!
