Today I have an item you don't see every day. It's called a "fluting iron" and was once an important instrument in the home of fashionable people:
There's even bits of helpful information permanently embedded in the cast iron, which is nice because I always lose those paper instruction booklets:
Fluting irons were necessary to create ruffles and pleats in clothing. The base would be heated and the clothing would be placed between the base and the hand-held piece, which would be rocked back and forth. The type of fluting iron I have here is called a "rocking fluter" for that very reason. And yes, there is a "rolling fluter", but I don't happen to own one.....
