Are you familiar with the "mammy's bench"? Today I have two examples that I came across while perusing Craig's List, something I do regularly. I didn't purchase either of them, but I thought they were worthy of sharing today because of their charm.
The rail on the left is to keep the baby from rolling off the bench as it rocks. "Mammy" would sit on the right:

The mammy's bench became popular from the early 1800's throughout the Civil War era on Southern plantations. Most mammy benches had a removable rail that inserted with two pegs that could be removed to allow 2 people to sit on the rocker when there wasn't a baby to rock.
